A study published October 14 in Science Advances by Washington University in St. Louis researchers found that salt exposure causes the Arabidopsis clock protein TIC to form small droplets in the cell nucleus. This clustering draws away some enzymes that suppress salt-protection genes, allowing those genes to become more active.

Plants without TIC were more vulnerable to salt under ordinary 24-hour cycles but handled it better under 21-hour light cycles matching their altered internal clock. The researchers say the link between the clock and stress response could inform future breeding or gene-editing work. The experiments used a model plant and did not demonstrate increased resilience in commercial crops.

## Data

### Research finding

The Arabidopsis study published in Science Advances on October 14 reports that salt affects the TIC clock protein and protective-gene activity.

Methodology: The date is the reported publication date. Findings concern a model plant and controlled experiments, not field results in commercial crops.
