US commercial crude oil inventories fell 1.9 million barrels to 410.6 million barrels in the week ending 23 October, according to the Energy Information Administration’s weekly summary released on 28 October. The total excludes the Strategic Petroleum Reserve and was 4% below the five-year average.

Gasoline inventories increased 3.9 million barrels, while distillate inventories decreased 1.5 million barrels. Refineries processed an average of 16.5 million barrels a day at 92.8% capacity utilisation. Inventory changes are weekly stock movements, while refinery processing is an average daily flow.

Over four weeks, total petroleum product supplied averaged 20.8 million barrels a day, up 0.2% from a year earlier. This is the release’s product-supplied measure rather than a direct count of final consumer purchases. The reference week and four-week average describe different reporting periods.
