The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported on October 9 that, as Hurricane Isaias approached, 130 platforms and rigs in the Gulf of Mexico had been evacuated or moved as of October 8. The agency reported that about 1.3 million barrels per day of crude oil output had been shut in.

On October 10, the Energy Department authorized emergency exchanges of up to 4 million barrels from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to help limit effects on refinery operations and fuel supplies. The caps are 2 million barrels each for ExxonMobil and BP America; the companies are to return the crude with additional barrels in 2027.
