The UK government said confirmation letters for the Warm Home Discount would begin going to eligible households on 22 October. The discount will reduce winter energy bills by £150.

The programme applies to eligible households in England and Wales, while the government says around six million households across Great Britain will benefit overall. The stated discount is £150 per household.

After the scheme expanded last year, nearly 2.3 million additional families received the rebate, including around one million families with children. This is retrospective information about the previous year’s expansion.

Letters are due to begin arriving this week and continue through January 2027. They will tell recipients whether the discount is automatic or whether they need to call their energy supplier’s helpline and provide further information.

Recipients asked to call must do so before 26 February 2027. The government advised people to use their normal supplier contact details and avoid entering financial information through suspicious links.

The discount is separate from other measures, including October’s removal of VAT from electricity bills. The government had previously confirmed that the Warm Home Discount scheme would continue through 2030–31.

The discount is a one-off credit against an electricity bill, not cash paid directly to the household. The government said letters would be issued from the week of 22 October through January 2027. Some recipients will be told that their supplier will apply the reduction automatically; others will need to call the scheme helpline and provide information by 26 February 2027 to confirm eligibility.

The scheme’s rules differ by nation. In England and Wales, the current guidance says eligibility is assessed using circumstances on 23 August 2026, including whether the electricity account holder or their partner receives specified means-tested benefits and whether the supplier participates. In Scotland, some households receive the rebate automatically while others apply through their supplier. Northern Ireland operates a separate Affordable Warmth scheme and is not covered by this discount.

The expansion announced earlier brought nearly 2.3 million additional families into the scheme in the previous year, including about one million families with children, according to the department. The 2026 announcement says every billpayer on means-tested benefits now qualifies, removing restrictions that had excluded some households. The headline estimate is around six million recipients across Britain, while the department’s letter instructions in the release focus on England and Wales.

A household that needs to act should follow the contact details in its official letter and use the usual channel for its energy supplier. The department warned recipients not to use suspicious links or provide financial information in response to unsolicited email, text or phone requests. For eligible customers, the supplier—not the government—applies the discount to the bill; it is not a payment that can be withdrawn as cash.

The government says the scheme is due to continue through 2030–31. It presented the 2026 discount alongside an October removal of VAT from electricity bills and a £2 cap on bus fares, but those are separate measures with different eligibility and billing mechanisms. The release does not quantify the effect of the VAT change or bus-fare cap on an individual household’s total winter costs.

The announcement also refers to an average £150 in energy costs removed from bills in the previous Budget, which the government says is factored into bills for coming years. That figure describes a separate budget measure and should not be added to the Warm Home Discount as if it were another £150 rebate for the same household in the same winter. The letter is the operational notice: it states whether the recipient must take action and by what date.
