The UK government announced plans on 13 October to regulate the heating-oil market for the first time, accepting a recommendation from the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA). Government and industry will develop a regulatory regime covering supplier standards, safeguards for vulnerable households and clearer routes to compensation when problems occur.

The government said some suppliers had cancelled orders after prices rose, leaving customers to reorder at higher prices; the CMA found that 1,700 households were owed compensation. Ministers will also review minimum order practices of 500 litres, which can require some customers to buy more fuel than they need. These are planned steps: the new regime has not yet taken effect.
