Uganda’s Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Judith Nabakooba, launched the distribution of 50,000 coffee seedlings to farmers in Mityana District on October 25, according to a report by Nile Post. The initiative is intended to expand farming activity and give participating households another source of income. The reported figure is the number of seedlings planned for distribution, not a count of seedlings already planted or surviving.

Nabakooba said the seedlings were meant for farmers participating in the Parish Development Model (PDM), which provides financial support to households for income-generating activities. The coffee plants are intended to complement that support with a longer-term agricultural activity. She asked beneficiaries to seek help from agricultural extension workers on planting, maintenance and management, and urged local leaders to explain the programme and monitor how recipients use the seedlings.

Mityana District Production Officer Daniel Sserembe said the 50,000 seedlings would go to farmers who had applied to benefit. He said they had been sourced from established nurseries. The report did not provide a district-by-district allocation, number of successful applicants, nursery names or delivery timetable. Sserembe said the distribution was expected to support the district’s coffee-growing efforts and diversify farmers’ activities.

Resident District Commissioner Joseph Mukiibi and District Secretary for Production, Marketing and Natural Resources Jackie Maria Nampijja also urged farmers to plant and care for the seedlings. Mukiibi said the initiative followed earlier support to tea growers through fertiliser assistance. He described the coffee distribution as another opportunity for residents to improve livelihoods, while noting that results depend on how beneficiaries use the support.

The launch is a distribution milestone, not evidence of higher coffee output or household income. Establishment will depend on planting, maintenance and continued agricultural guidance, as local officials themselves stressed. The public account did not state how many farmers applied or received seedlings at the event, nor did it give a start or completion schedule for the distribution. The announcement therefore describes the planned input and programme link, rather than a measured change in production.
