SUEZ says it has secured authorization to continue and extend activity at the SEDA waste site in Chenillé-Champteussé, Maine-et-Loire, in western France. The company announced the permit on 22 October. The prefectural order was signed on 25 March 2026 and allows non-hazardous waste storage for 16 years and hazardous-waste storage for 27 years. A first expansion phase, a new cell for non-hazardous waste, entered service on 1 September.

The site has been operated by SUEZ since 1978. The company describes SEDA as an installation classified for environmental protection, combining non-hazardous waste storage, hazardous-waste treatment and storage, treatment and recovery of polluted soils, and a photovoltaic plant on restored and backfilled land. The site is intended to serve local authorities and industrial operators in western France, handling residual materials that require controlled storage or treatment.

SUEZ reports total annual capacity of 200,000 tonnes: 90,000 tonnes for non-hazardous waste and 110,000 tonnes for hazardous waste. The non-hazardous stream includes material from recycling centers, wastewater treatment plants and local economic activity. Hazardous inputs include industrial sludge and contaminated soils or materials, construction waste such as asbestos, lead, refractory materials and rock wool, and residues from waste-to-energy facilities, biomass boilers and solid recovered fuel operations.

The waste site also produces renewable electricity. SUEZ says a photovoltaic plant and a biogas recovery unit using gas from non-hazardous waste storage together generate nearly 12 gigawatt-hours a year, which the company equates to the consumption of about 8,000 residents. The company expects the extension of existing facilities to almost double that output in coming years. This is a forecast in the company release; it does not specify a date, generation profile or additional installed power.

The permit provides a longer operating horizon for two waste categories under different durations. These are authorization periods, not a promise that the site will reach its stated capacity each year or that all permitted waste will be accepted. The new cell placed in service in September is the first described physical step of the extension. The source does not say how much additional capacity it adds or provide a construction schedule for later phases.

SUEZ presents the authorization within its wider French hazardous-waste network. It says the company has treatment capacity of 1.6 million tonnes a year for hazardous waste nationally and operates five stabilization and storage facilities out of roughly a dozen in France. It also points to the separate Villeparisis site in Île-de-France, whose extension was authorized in September 2025. These are company-reported figures and describe national operations, not the SEDA site alone.

The industrial role of the site is tied to waste streams from municipalities, construction and manufacturing. Secure treatment and storage can provide an outlet for residues that cannot be returned directly to production. At SEDA, the permitted mix includes polluted soils and industrial residues alongside construction-related hazardous materials. The release does not disclose the destination of treated outputs, the share recovered for reuse, or the actual annual volumes handled.

The announcement therefore combines a regulatory milestone, an operational milestone and an energy claim: a permit signed in March, the first new cell operating from September, and near-12-GWh annual renewable electricity production attributed to the site. The reported capacity split makes clear that 200,000 tonnes per year is divided between distinct hazardous and non-hazardous activities. The projected near-doubling of electricity is a company expectation, not a measured increase already achieved.
