A solar-powered water system in Tawila, North Darfur, is serving approximately 10,000 people through six distribution points, UNICEF reported on 15 October. The agency said each point has six taps and the system provides at least 15 litres of safe water per person a day. The water yard is connected to elevated storage tanks and was built close to a displacement camp where families had depended on truck deliveries and faced long waits.

UNICEF said the water infrastructure was accompanied by distribution of containers, soap, household treatment chemicals and hygiene kits, with sanitation materials and hygiene-awareness sessions also provided. The report does not give a commissioning date or an independently verified user count. UNICEF linked the supplies to in-kind support from the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.
