# South Africa’s annual inflation rises to 4.5% in September

Statistics South Africa reported that annual consumer inflation in urban areas rose to 4.5% in September from 4.4% in August. The consumer price index increased 0.4% over the month. Annual goods inflation rose to 4.1%, while services inflation eased to 4.9%.

Transport prices increased 10.8% over the year and contributed 1.5 percentage points to the headline rate; housing and utilities rose 5.2% and contributed 1.3 points. Transport prices rose 2.0% month on month in September, while fuel prices were 27.9% higher year on year. Stats SA notes that some CPI items are surveyed less frequently than monthly.
