The province broke ground on the road earlier in 2026. The road is scheduled to open by November 2030. The province says its plan unlocks access to the Ring of Fire five years sooner than originally planned. The road will give the Webequie community its first all-season road access to the rest of Ontario and forms part of a wider Ring of Fire road network. Ontario and Webequie First Nation signed a Community Partnership Agreement in 2025 to accelerate construction. Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria said the government is building the highway infrastructure in partnership with Webequie First Nation, and Chief Lorraine Whitehead called the selection of a construction manager a step forward in realizing the community-led vision for the road.
