Nigeria’s Lee Engineering has built two midline compressor stations intended to let the Escravos–Lagos Pipeline System deliver at its expanded design capacity of 2.3 billion standard cubic feet of gas per day, the State House said on October 22. The stations are in Edo State and are being executed by Lee Engineering under an engineering, procurement and construction arrangement. The statement describes a project milestone and the pipeline’s design capacity; it does not provide measured daily throughput or say that the full 2.3 billion standard cubic feet is already flowing.

The State House said the pipeline’s designed capacity rose from 1.1 billion to 2.3 billion standard cubic feet per day through the ELPS II expansion. The two stations are needed to raise operating pressure so that the line can deliver at that expanded level. The release did not provide the compressor models, commissioning date, station-by-station capacity or current gas volumes. The distinction between a larger design limit and actual delivered gas is important for assessing what the construction enables versus what the network is presently transporting.

The route is expected to strengthen gas transportation to power plants and industries along the corridor. The government also said it could support higher supply to neighbouring West African countries through the West African Gas Pipeline and create additional export-revenue opportunities. These are projected effects, not reported results: the statement contains no plant-by-plant supply figures, export volumes, revenue estimates or schedule for the extra deliveries.

The announcement placed the project within President Bola Tinubu’s Nigeria First policy, with a call for international oil companies operating in Nigeria to give competent domestic engineering and manufacturing businesses greater access to major projects. Lee Engineering founder Leemon Ikpea told the president that the company’s fabrication yard in Warri, Delta State, is producing some components for the stations. The release did not identify the components, their share of total project content, contract value or number of jobs created.

The State House cited 2024 executive orders and presidential directives on local-content compliance, contracting costs and approval timelines as measures intended to attract investment and reduce delays. The meeting also involved the company’s leadership and the president at the State House in Abuja. The notice does not describe whether the compressor works were commissioned during that meeting, nor does it give an official completion certificate or operator handover date.

For energy users, the immediate significance is the additional compression infrastructure required to move toward the pipeline’s higher design capacity. If the line operates at that level, it could carry more gas toward domestic power and industrial users and connect with the regional export route described by the government. But the release gives no actual throughput, gas-source breakdown, downstream capacity or evidence that those prospective supply gains have yet occurred.

The next evidence to watch would be commissioning and operating data: whether the two stations are in service, the volumes transported, and how much reaches power plants, industrial customers or the West African Gas Pipeline. Until those figures are published, the October 22 announcement establishes that a Nigerian contractor built two stations and that the government expects them to help unlock a 2.3-billion-standard-cubic-foot-per-day design capacity. It does not establish realized output or export earnings.

## Data

### Escravos–Lagos design capacity and compressor data

Design capacities and station count stated in the State House release.

Methodology: The 1.1 and 2.3 billion cubic feet per day values are the reported earlier and expanded design capacities, not actual transported volumes. The 2.3 value is observed as an announced existing design rating. Two stations counts the stated EPC project scope, not proven commissioning or gas flow. The stations are intended to raise pressure so the line can deliver at its expanded design capacity.

| label | value | unit | period | basis |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Earlier design capacity | 1.1 | billion cubic feet per day | 2026-10-22 | observed |
| Post-ELPS II design capacity | 2.3 | billion cubic feet per day | 2026-10-22 | observed |
| Midline compressor stations in the EPC project | 2 | count | 2026-10-22 | observed |
