NIBIO and Sigerfjord Marine Innovation Center are studying how by-products from fisheries, aquaculture and agriculture could become omega-3- and protein-rich ingredients for fish feed. Work underway since 2021 breaks fish residues into peptone; marine microorganisms grow quickly on it without light and produce omega-3-rich biomass.

NIBIO says trial feedstock utilization was comparable to or better than conventional sugar-based methods. The next phase is to include seaweed and agricultural residues. MABIT provided NOK 1 million for process control, oxygen supply and documentation; the source says larger-scale testing and commercial use remain future goals.

## Data

### Fish-residue fermentation project

NIBIO trials use fish peptone to produce omega-3-rich microbial biomass.

Methodology: The source describes trial results; scale-up and commercial use have not yet occurred.

### Source-reported indicators

NIBIO trials use fish peptone to produce omega-3-rich microbial biomass.

Methodology: Values retain the source basis. Annual feed figures are 2025 sector estimates; the October seed count uses the deposit period. Other dates identify report publication, not experiment day. Laboratory oil-holding capacity is not nutritional fat content; counts do not establish production or scale-up success.
