MIT News reported on October 13 on a study published in PNAS on October 9. The McGovern Institute and K. Lisa Yang ICoN Center model starts with randomly connected units and lets them form functional network structures under shared local rules.

The researchers say self-assembling motifs act as building blocks for functional circuits and the network develops through optimization similar to gradient descent. The work does not show that it learns exactly like a biological brain; the authors describe it as a starting point for biologically informative models.

## Data

### Research finding

MIT research described an artificial neural network self-organizing under simple local rules.

Methodology: This records MIT News’ October 13, 2026 report. The performance comparison is qualitative; no accuracy or sample-size metric is added because the source gives none.
