MIT News reported on October 14 that researchers from MIT, Toronto, Microsoft and other institutions built a layer that learns from historical errors in weather models and corrects their forecasts. The technique post-processes rather than replaces the underlying model.

The paper reports that the method beat climatological averages for two-to-six-week forecasts across most land regions and significantly improved extreme-event prediction. These are research results, not operational forecasts for particular places and dates.

## Data

### Research finding

MIT researchers and collaborators developed a machine-learning correction layer for subseasonal weather forecasts.

Methodology: This block records the study described in MIT News on October 14, 2026. Forecast-skill statements reflect the researchers’ report of the Nature paper and competition, not real-time forecasts.
