# Microsoft introduces open-source Tessera integrated HSM project

> At the Open Compute Project Global Summit, Microsoft announced Project Tessera, an open-source integrated hardware security module design. It aims to keep keys inside a hardware security boundary close to workloads and provide open protocols across HSM implementations. Software, drivers, firmware and hardware designs were published on GitHub.

Microsoft and Marvell demonstrated partition cloning and resilience rings between Tessera and LiquidSecurity 2. Non-extractable keys remain inside the modules, while inter-HSM communication uses post-quantum cryptography. The project aims for FIPS 140-3 Level 3 protection; that goal does not mean certification has already been granted.
