This was the second consecutive year researchers landed on the island. The ministry said an erosion gully where plants had been observed the previous year had disappeared, while moss and algae were found in another. A seismometer was installed for the first time since the major 2019–20 eruption, and satellite remote operation was tested.

Sooty tern numbers, which had fallen sharply in the previous survey, increased substantially this year, though the ministry described the group as potentially unstable. Six species were recorded in the intertidal area, including remains. These are field observations, not estimates of permanent island populations.
