Imported energy was 61.8% more expensive than a year earlier and 14.5% more expensive than in August. Excluding energy, import prices rose 5.5% over the year and 0.5% during the month. These comparisons distinguish broad price growth from the particularly large movement in energy; they are not changes in the physical volume of imports.

The foreign-trade price indexes use contractually agreed prices for goods bought abroad or sold abroad. Taxes and customs duties are excluded. Their basket and weights refer to the 2021 base year. The figures therefore should not be read as consumer inflation, customs-inclusive landed costs or the total value of Germany’s import bill.
