Germany and the European Commission signed a joint statement on 5 October to strengthen water resilience and accelerate implementation of EU water legislation. Germany became the first country to complete the Commission’s structured dialogue process, launched in November 2025.

The statement includes reducing legacy mining pollution, improving water efficiency and, where needed, adding treatment stages to remove micropollutants such as pharmaceutical residues, pesticides and PFAS. It also calls for better natural water retention and keeping water abstraction at sustainable levels.
