The provisional annual increase was 24.1% for energy, 2.7% for services and 1.2% for food. The harmonised index used for European comparisons showed annual inflation of 3.8%, compared with 3.4% in September, and a monthly increase of 0.4%. The national and harmonised indexes measure different baskets and treatments, including healthcare reimbursement.

The estimates use a restricted set of observed prices and estimates for some tariffs not yet available. Final October results are scheduled for 13 November. INSEE says the provisional indexes should not be used for contractual indexation; the release is an early measurement of the current month, rather than a forecast of a future month.
