The FAO announced two forestry prizes on October 14 at its headquarters in Rome, as part of the 2026 World Food Forum Transformative Research Challenge. Bangladesh’s Mangrove Intelligence Research Team was recognised for a digital decision-support platform for coastal mangrove restoration. Uganda’s Gad Okodi represented a team developing ways for communities to report forest disturbances using basic mobile phones and local languages.

Each winning team will receive USD 10,000 in research funding and opportunities to promote and scale its work. The finalists in both categories, Chinampa Guardians from Mexico and Watershed Restoration and Community-led Monitoring in Kajulu Forest from Kenya, will also each receive USD 10,000. The announcement took place at a hybrid event at FAO headquarters.
