The European Commission proposed a new EU Critical Communication System for first responders on 30 September 2026. It aims to give police, fire, medical and civil protection services secure, resilient channels for real-time communication during crises.

The Commission said existing national systems are not connected and may stop working across borders, limiting joint emergency response. The proposed system is also intended to work when terrestrial communications are unavailable and would rely on critical components built by European companies.
