# EU Council sets negotiating position to speed up environmental assessments

On 30 September, the EU Council set its negotiating position on a proposal to simplify and accelerate environmental assessments. The plan includes single points of contact, digitalisation and streamlined procedural timelines.

The proposal is part of the Omnibus VIII simplification package. The Council said reducing administrative costs and burdens should go alongside maintaining high EU environmental-protection standards. This was not a final law but the member states’ common position ahead of negotiations with the European Parliament.
