Etleva Kadilli, UNICEF regional director for Eastern and Southern Africa, voiced concern on 1 October about the impact of intensifying fighting in northern Ethiopia on children and their families. UNICEF said it was aware of reports that children had been injured or killed and that residential areas and public facilities had been damaged; the statement gave no casualty count.

Kadilli urged all parties to exercise restraint, protect children and civilian infrastructure, uphold international humanitarian law and facilitate safe, rapid and unimpeded humanitarian access. UNICEF said communities had worked to rebuild schools, health services and water systems, and called for those gains to be protected.
