Initial testing involved Camden, Barnet and Dorset councils. The government reports a 58% reduction in time spent on key planning tasks and says routine householder application processing was reduced from eight weeks to four. Those are reported early-testing results, rather than an independently established performance guarantee for every council.

Twelve additional councils bring the pilot’s total to 15. Officers will use PlanAssist alongside their normal procedures to test it at scale. The government intends to make the tool available across England by the end of 2027, while stating that use of the software will not be mandatory.
