Working natural gas in underground storage across the Lower 48 states increased by 67 billion cubic feet in the week ended October 9, reaching 3,567 Bcf, the U.S. Energy Information Administration reported on October 15. Stocks had stood at 3,500 Bcf the previous week.

Inventories were 143 Bcf below the year-earlier level and 45 Bcf above the 2021–2025 five-year average; EIA said the total remained within the five-year historical range. Weekly estimates have sampling variability, and the report notes that regional components may not sum exactly to the total because of independent rounding.

## Data

### Lower 48 natural gas storage summary

EIA weekly report released October 15, 2026, for the week ended October 9.

Methodology: EIA estimates are reported in Bcf (billion cubic feet). The numeric column uses 1 Bcf = 28,316.846592 thousand cubic metres, rounded to the nearest thousand cubic metres. This is a volume-unit conversion only, with no temperature or pressure adjustment and no gain in source precision. Sampling variability and independent rounding apply.

| Measure | Value (Bcf) | Approximate volume (thousand m³) |
|---|---|---|
| Working gas stocks, October 9, 2026 | 3,567 Bcf | 101006192 |
| Net weekly change | +67 Bcf | 1897229 |
| Difference from year-earlier stocks | -143 Bcf | -4049309 |
| Difference from 2021–2025 five-year average | +45 Bcf | 1274258 |
