The U.S. Department of Energy announced on October 22 that 63 Tribe-led projects in 16 states, including Alaska, had been selected for award negotiations. DOE described the selections as more than $125 million and said they involved 61 tribal entities. The department called the package the largest single investment in the 20-year history of its Office of Indian Energy, but stressed that the selections had not yet become final funding awards.

The department grouped the projects into three types. Thirteen focus on deployment and installation of community-scale energy projects. DOE said the selected work is intended to bring electricity service to 150 tribal homes that currently lack it, convert 500 homes and businesses to natural-gas heating, and upgrade electrical infrastructure. The release presents these as intended project outcomes; it does not report that the connections, conversions or upgrades have already been completed.

A further 27 projects cover predevelopment work to identify community-scale opportunities and move concepts toward implementation readiness. DOE listed studies involving Tribal Utility Authorities, electricity transmission and distribution, resource assessments, resilience measures and workforce development. The remaining 23 projects cover planning, assessment and feasibility work for larger energy developments, including geothermal and other resources for baseload or backup power and potential revenue from electricity sales. These categories include early-stage work as well as deployment, so the package is not solely a construction programme.

DOE said the projects would be supported through fiscal year 2026 and prior-year congressional appropriations. It also stated that selection for negotiations is not a commitment to issue an award or provide funds: the department and applicants must negotiate, and DOE may cancel negotiations and rescind a selection. The announcement therefore records a funding selection stage and proposed project scope, rather than money already disbursed or completed infrastructure.

DOE’s Office of Indian Energy provides a funding-history context for the selection. In March 2026 it issued the “Unleashing Tribal Energy Development” funding opportunity, soliciting applications for up to $50 million. The office’s selections page says applications requested about ten times the amount available. The October package is described as more than $125 million and as the office’s largest single investment, but the department says the selected projects are still entering award negotiations and could be cancelled before awards are made. The two figures therefore refer to different stages and should not be read as a $125 million payment already made.
