University of Delaware researchers are testing food by-products from campus kitchens and brewing with black soldier fly larvae. A university report dated Oct. 15 describes 30 bins holding about 4,000 larvae each; campus restaurant Grain Exchange diverted nearly 1,800 pounds of food waste, about 40% of its annual waste, to the effort.

The team warns that contaminated inputs can contaminate insects and samples for Salmonella; frass must be cured before use, and larvae are cooked before feed use. Researchers say the pilot does not prove pathogen control at industrial scale. Waste type, safe processing and scale-up remain important constraints.

## Data

### Black soldier fly pilot

About 4,000 larvae in each of 30 bins; Grain Exchange diverted nearly 1,800 pounds of food waste.

Methodology: Uses approximate quantities from the pilot report. Safe processing and industrial-scale performance are not yet established.

### Source-reported indicators

About 4,000 larvae in each of 30 bins; Grain Exchange diverted nearly 1,800 pounds of food waste.

Methodology: Values retain the source basis. Annual feed figures are 2025 sector estimates; the October seed count uses the deposit period. Other dates identify report publication, not experiment day. Laboratory oil-holding capacity is not nutritional fat content; counts do not establish production or scale-up success.
