A Cornwall developer has been ordered to clean up an illegal waste site near Newquay after an Environment Agency prosecution, the agency reported on 28 October. It said at least 25,000 tonnes were deposited at Hendra Croft, including asbestos, electrical waste and mattresses.

Paul Stephens received a 13-month prison sentence suspended for two years, a four-month nightly curfew and 180 hours of unpaid work. He was disqualified from acting as a company director for four years and ordered to clear the site within 12 months. Park Lane Financial Management Ltd was fined £90,000.

The agency said the company admitted three environmental offences and Stephens admitted illegal depositing and burning of waste. Officers had identified waste stored on bare earth and buried construction material, creating pollution and health risks. The clean-up requirement is a court order; the source does not say the waste has already been removed.
