WHO validated Chile for eliminating dog-transmitted rabies as a public-health problem. Chile is the first country in South America to receive the validation.

WHO announced the recognition on 14 September after more than 50 years without a human case of dog-transmitted rabies.

The validation recognizes capacity to prevent re-emergence and sustained public-health work. The announcement does not say all forms of rabies or all animal cases have disappeared.
