Canada announced more than $813 million on October 23 for a package of research programs supporting researchers and institutions. The Tri-agency Institutional Programs Secretariat said the funding covers more than 450 researchers, research infrastructure and contributions to institutions’ indirect research costs. The figures are announced grants and contributions across several programs; the release does not say all funds have been paid. The source does not separately identify the currency of its dollar amounts.

One component is $120 million for five teams selected in the New Frontiers in Research Fund’s 2026 Transformation competition. The competition supports large-scale, Canadian-led interdisciplinary projects. Its recipient list includes work on access to HIV therapies, recycling critical minerals and PFAS for clean energy, Indigenous leadership in research and care for sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections, regenerative medicine, and a resilient blood supply. The program page says the five grant periods began September 1, 2026; that start date is not a payment schedule for the October 23 package.

The 2026-27 base Research Support Fund grants provide more than $369 million to 161 institutions to cover part of the indirect costs of operating research enterprises. Two additional streams under the fund allocate nearly $104 million in Incremental Project Grants to 34 institutions and nearly $25 million in Research Security grants to 51 institutions. Public recipient lists show these amounts distributed through separate streams. Because an institution can appear in more than one stream, the three institution counts should not be added and described as a unique total.

The 2025-2 Canada Research Chairs cycle carries more than $187 million for 220 new and renewed chairs. Its recipient page lists 220 chairholders, including both new appointments and renewals, so the figure is not a count of first-time appointees alone. The chairs are intended to attract and retain researchers across fields including health, engineering, natural sciences, social sciences and humanities.

The Canada Foundation for Innovation’s John R. Evans Leaders Fund contributes nearly $8 million for 35 research infrastructure projects at 22 institutions. A separate equity award program provides $300,000 to three researchers. These smaller streams are part of the broader package, and institutions may also receive support from other streams. The counts describe the scope of different awards and projects, not a combined total of distinct beneficiaries.

The Tri-agency Institutional Programs Secretariat administers the programs on behalf of three federal research funders: the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council. The announcement cites clean energy, regenerative medicine, machine learning, health and community services among areas receiving support. The Research Support Fund helps institutions with indirect research costs, while NFRF Transformation funds interdisciplinary, high-impact projects and the Chairs program supports research talent.

The announced amounts cover programs with different purposes, not one grant to a single recipient group. Indirect-cost support, research infrastructure, chairs and team grants serve distinct functions, while recipient lists can include the same institution in more than one stream. The release says more than 450 researchers are supported but gives no de-duplicated count across programs. The figures should therefore be read as separate program scopes, not added to derive totals of unique institutions, people or new funding.

## Data

### Announced recipient counts across Tri-agency programs

Announced counts of teams, institutions, projects and chairholders in separate programs in the October 23, 2026 package.

Methodology: Counts are program-level announced award or recipient scope, not proof of payment. Institutions and people may overlap across programs, so metrics must not be summed as unique-recipient totals.
