Natural Products Canada (NPC) announced CAD$1,016,330 for five early-stage companies on October 22, describing the package as support for commercialization work across Canada’s bioeconomy. NPC says the investment enables projects with a combined budget of CAD$2,543,328 in Nova Scotia, British Columbia and Ontario. This is a set of project commitments, not a report of products already launched or sales achieved. The organization says its cumulative investments now exceed CAD$15.2 million across more than 100 Canadian start-ups.

The recipients span food, agriculture and consumer products. Novagevity, based in Nova Scotia, is developing two plant-based nutrition products under its Sperri brand: one aimed at glycemic health and another pediatric oral nutrition supplement. Catalera Biosolutions in British Columbia plans field validation of a natural-wax microencapsulation technology for biological seed treatments under Canadian agronomic conditions. Those projects test product and field performance; the release does not provide results from the trials.

Sustainable Bioproducts Innovations, also in British Columbia, is scaling a chia-mucilage and dietary-fibre platform intended to replace fats in foods including sauces, spreads, dairy alternatives and baked goods. Its work includes production scale-up and validation for commercial applications. Ontario-based Toothpod received support for customer discovery and market segmentation for a functional chewing gum positioned as an oral-hygiene supplement when standard tools are unavailable. The company’s product claims are attributed to NPC’s description, not independently tested results in this announcement.

The fifth recipient, Naturfect Natural Solutions in Ontario, will conduct a scale-up demonstration trial for a plant-derived laundry detergent. Across the five projects, NPC lists CAD$861,507 in total project budget and CAD$344,602 in NPC support for Novagevity; CAD$344,972 and CAD$137,989 for Catalera; CAD$65,000 and CAD$25,000 for Toothpod; CAD$874,895 and CAD$349,958 for Sustainable Bioproducts Innovations; and CAD$396,954 and CAD$158,781 for Naturfect. The listed contributions sum to CAD$1,016,330.

NPC places the awards in three commercialization streams: Proof of Concept, Fast Track to Financing and Access to Talent. Four projects are identified as Proof of Concept; Toothpod is listed under Fast Track to Financing. NPC says its model combines funding with guidance and access to its network. It also reports that portfolio companies have raised a further CAD$51 for every dollar of NPC investment. That is a company-wide, historical portfolio claim in the release; it is not a result measured for this five-company cohort.

The federal Strategic Response Fund supports this investment, according to NPC. The release frames the work as a bridge between early innovation and market entry, but publishes no projected launch dates, expected jobs, revenue forecasts or commercial success probabilities for these five projects. Its stated project budgets describe planned activity, not proven market demand. The announcement gives provincial locations for recipients but no province-by-province summary of the total investment.

The five awards therefore cover distinct stages of testing and commercialization, from field trials for agricultural inputs to food formulation, customer research and manufacturing demonstrations. The totals provide a clear scale for this cohort while leaving outcomes open: project completion, product approvals, customer adoption and follow-on financing remain future questions. All amounts are Canadian dollars, and the detailed recipient amounts in the table reproduce NPC’s published figures.
