Statistics Canada reported 541,320 people receiving regular Employment Insurance (EI) benefits in August 2026, a decrease of 0.8% from July and 2.9% from August 2025. The agency released the updated monthly tables on 22 October. The measure counts beneficiaries receiving regular benefits; it is not the same as the number of people unemployed, all EI claimants, or new claims filed during the month.

The national decline was not shared by every province. Quebec had 121,710 regular beneficiaries, down 2.3% from July and 5.7% year over year. Ontario counted 185,210, up 0.4% on the month and 0.7% over the year. Alberta recorded 60,810, down 2.1% monthly and 6.4% annually, while British Columbia had 60,680, up 0.1% monthly and 5.0% year over year.

Atlantic Canada also recorded monthly decreases: Newfoundland and Labrador had 24,990 beneficiaries (-2.0%), Prince Edward Island 7,210 (-1.9%), Nova Scotia 21,700 (-0.5%) and New Brunswick 25,200 (-1.0%). Manitoba was nearly unchanged at 17,290 (-0.2%), while Saskatchewan increased to 14,480 (+0.7%). The provincial differences mean the national change should not be read as a uniform labour-market signal.

The territorial counts were smaller and showed mixed movements. Yukon recorded 570 regular beneficiaries, up 1.8% from July; the Northwest Territories counted 690 (+3.0%); and Nunavut recorded 410 (+2.5%). The year-over-year rates also differed: the Northwest Territories was up 9.5%, British Columbia 5.0%, while Manitoba was down 9.0% and Alberta 6.4%.

Employment Insurance statistics describe program use and can move with eligibility, application timing and administrative processing as well as labour-market conditions. The release updated the August 2026 data tables and pointed readers to Statistics Canada’s Guide to Employment Insurance Statistics for concepts and definitions. It did not provide a causal explanation for the monthly national decline. The next release, for September, was scheduled for 18 November 2026.

The geographic detail helps explain why the national total alone can hide different local movements. Ontario and British Columbia were the two large provinces with monthly increases, while the largest provincial declines were in Quebec and Alberta. These provincial rates describe the change in regular-benefit recipients between July and August; they do not identify whether people entered or left benefits because of hiring, job losses, eligibility decisions or the timing of claims. The source presents counts and percentage changes, not causal attribution.

The monthly beneficiary count is an administrative measure of people receiving regular benefits and should be read alongside, rather than substituted for, labour-force survey measures.
