Global investment firm Brookfield opened a Doha office focused on its global credit investment platform, including Oaktree. The company’s statement, carried by Qatar News Agency on 25 October, said the office would support an expansion of its investment activity in Qatar and the wider Gulf. Brookfield said it plans to work closely with local partners, consistent with its strategy of establishing a presence in markets where it deploys capital.

Jad Ellawn, Brookfield’s managing partner and regional head for the Middle East, described Qatar as an important global investment hub and the Doha office as a natural step in the firm’s regional expansion. The statement pointed to Brookfield’s existing investments and partnerships in Qatar, including a planned joint venture with Qai, the artificial-intelligence company affiliated with the Qatar Investment Authority.

Brookfield and Qai previously announced a planned US$20 billion venture to develop AI infrastructure in Qatar and selected international markets. That amount refers to the planned joint venture, not capital committed by the new Doha office or investment already spent. Brookfield said the office would focus on credit investment, but it did not identify an initial transaction or a new portfolio target.

The firm said it manages about US$20 billion in assets across the GCC in private equity, real estate, credit and infrastructure, and more than US$1 trillion globally. The regional figure is an assets-under-management total, not an investment amount for Qatar or the Doha office. The opening expands Brookfield’s local business-development presence, but the announcement did not quantify its near-term effect on investment flows.

The office announcement is part of a wider credit-investment strategy rather than a disclosed Qatar loan or portfolio transaction. The company said its regional business had about $20 billion in assets under management and that a planned joint venture with Qatar Investment Authority would have $20 billion of investment capacity. Those are different measures: current regional AUM describes assets managed, while the joint venture figure describes intended capacity. Neither figure is an amount already invested in Qatar.

Brookfield described the Doha presence as a way to work more closely with regional investors, borrowers and partners as demand for private credit expands. The release did not identify a first transaction, timetable for capital deployment, sector allocation or a target return. As a result, the near-term development is the establishment of a local office and the stated investment platform, while the scale and pace of lending remain future questions. The company’s global AUM figure also spans its broader business and should not be confused with capital available to the Doha office.
