# Simulation examines how tin solder boundaries absorb dislocations

> Researchers at Los Alamos National Laboratory and Iowa State University modelled how a (301) twin boundary in β-tin interacts with dislocations. The simulation concerns deformation mechanisms in tin alloys used in electronic solder.

Using molecular-dynamics simulations with a machine-learned interatomic potential, the paper studied c-direction dislocations arriving at a (301) twin boundary in β-tin. The model showed that absorption by the boundary forms an asymmetric facet whose length grows approximately linearly with the number of absorbed dislocations.

The authors’ elasticity calculation matched the simulation more closely when it included the asymmetric facet’s disclination character; it predicted about five geometrically necessary dislocations for the base configuration. The findings are from atomistic simulation and theory. The study did not measure durability or failure life in a real solder component.
