The U.S. Department of Energy said on October 5 it intends to provide up to $150 million in Defense Production Act funding for Alaska’s Beluga-Healy transmission project. DOE described the planned project as a second high-voltage connection between Southcentral and Interior Alaska, combining the federal funding with $268 million in non-federal funding for an estimated total of $418 million.

The proposed line would run about 223 miles between Beluga and Healy. DOE says the additional route would improve reliability for communities and military installations, and could serve about 75% of Alaska’s population once complete. The announcement is an intent to deploy funding for development; it does not say the line is built or operating.
